Retaining structures

Slopes are usually retained because of:

– Aesthetical view of landscape

– Prevention of slope failure, e.g. excavations, failingor poor shape slopes, etc.

Slopes can be retained with:

– Gabions

– Gravity walls

– Reinforced soil (geosynthetics)

– Bioengineering techniques

If it is a necessity to retain excavations (>1.5m depending of the soil) solutions are:

– Berliner wall

– Sheet-pile wall

– Continuous RC wall

– Secant wall

A range of combinations of different retaining structures could be also used.

Retaining structure type depends normally on soil properties and water table conditions.
